How does a gas fire work?
The engineering behind gas fires can be quite advanced, but the basic operation is straightforward. When you switch the fire on, gas travels from your property’s supply to the appliance, where an ignition system lights the burner.
The gas burns through the burner ports, which produces the flames you see around the fuel bed. As the gas burns, it generates heat that transfers into the room through radiant heat and convection.
How much control you have depends on the model. Some gas fires use simple manual controls; others come with convenient slide controls or fully remote operation for maximum convenience.

Where do the gases from a gas fire go?

- Conventional flue gas fires: If your home has a traditional brick chimney or a pre-built flue, a conventional gas fire uses that existing structure to draw the exhaust gases up and out of your property.
- Balanced flue gas fires: These fires are fully room-sealed and have a pipe system that connects directly to the outside. Usually installed against an external wall, one passage draws fresh air in from outside, and another carries combustion gases out.
Are all gas fires the same?
No. We mentioned all gas fires work on the same basic principle, and, while that’s still true, their design and installation can vary considerably.
If you want the classic look of a 19th-century traditional gas fire (with all the efficiency of a 21st-century appliance), open-fronted models are the best pick. Glass-fronted models, however, create a sealed environment for top heat efficiency.
Inset fires are often designed to slot within traditional fireplace openings, and hole-in-the-wall models are self-explanatory – they are fitted directly into the wall to save on floor space.
